How to use the word finder
This helper is for Wordle-style guessing games, where each guess comes back with coloured letters. Type your guess, then tap each letter until it matches the game: grey for a letter that is not in the word, yellow for a letter that is in the word but not in that place, green for a letter in the right place. Add a row for each guess you have made.
Repeated letters are handled the way the games score them. If you guessed a word with two Es and one came back yellow while the other came back grey, the answer has exactly one E, and it is in neither of those places. Two coloured Es mean at least two.
The list is sorted by a simple letter score: each word earns a point for every remaining candidate that shares each of its different letters. Words near the top test the most common letters, so they cut the list down fastest. Words come from the public-domain ENABLE list, which includes many rare words a game may never choose, so pick a familiar word when two scores are close.
Questions
Why does the list say no words fit?
Usually one tile has the wrong colour, or a letter was mistyped. Check each guess against the game; the summary above the list shows what the colours say.
What is a good first guess?
One with five different common letters. Before you enter anything, the list shows the words that score best against the whole list.
Is this cheating?
That is up to you and whoever you play with. Many people use it after a game to see what they missed, or to learn which letters to test early.
