Each puzzle starts as a complete, random grid. PuzzleBirch then removes digits in matching pairs (so the pattern of givens looks the same upside down), and after every removal it checks that a careful human solver could still finish the puzzle using only the techniques allowed for your level. A puzzle that logic can finish has exactly one solution, so every puzzle here is fair: no guessing, no second answer.
The level is the hardest technique the puzzle needs when you always use the simplest step available:
| Level | Hardest technique needed |
|---|---|
| Easy | Hidden and naked singles only |
| Medium | Pointing pairs, box–line reduction, naked or hidden pairs and triples |
| Hard | X-wing, XY-wing or swordfish |
| Expert | Skyscraper, two-string kite, XYZ-wing or simple colouring |
A puzzle is kept only if it needs a technique from its own level, so a Hard puzzle really does need an X-wing or similar somewhere. Stuck on one? Type it into the sudoku solver for a hint that names the technique.
Leave “Print answer pages” ticked. The puzzle pages print first, then the answers on separate pages in the same layout. Choose “Save as PDF” in the print window to keep a copy.
Yes. The same set number, level and layout always make the same puzzles. Note the number shown on the printed page.
Most of any puzzle falls to simple steps; the hard technique may be needed only once, often around the middle. That one step is what makes it Hard.
